MHT-CET is the gateway to almost every engineering, pharmacy and agriculture seat in Maharashtra, and to a large share of the state's most cost-effective professional education. It is also an exam that a great many students prepare for incorrectly — because they prepare for it as though it were a smaller JEE. It is not. The syllabus is different, the weighting is different, the marking scheme is different, and the optimal strategy is almost the opposite.

Quick answer: MHT-CET is a computer-based test with two groups — PCM for engineering and PCB for pharmacy, agriculture and allied courses. Mathematics carries double marks in PCM. The Two Facts That Should Shape Your Entire Strategy

First: Mathematics carries double weight in PCM. Fifty mathematics questions at two marks each equal one hundred marks — half the total, and as much as Physics and Chemistry combined. A student who is strong in Mathematics and average elsewhere will outscore a student with the reverse profile every single time. If you are preparing for engineering through MHT-CET and you are allocating equal time to all three subjects, you are allocating wrongly.

MHT-CET Physics questions are generally more direct than JEE Physics — often single-concept applications rather than multi-step problems. Formula fluency and unit handling matter more than problem-solving depth.

Chemistry

How Percentile and Normalisation Work

This is the most misunderstood part of MHT-CET, and misunderstanding it causes real anxiety.

MHT-CET is conducted across multiple days and shifts, and different shifts get different question papers. Because no two papers are identical in difficulty, raw marks are not directly comparable. The State CET Cell therefore converts raw scores into percentile scores.

Your percentile expresses the proportion of candidates who scored at or below you. A 95 percentile means roughly 95% of candidates scored at or below your level — it does not mean you scored 95%.   1. Do a first pass answering only what you know immediately. Roughly 60% of questions should fall here. Do not linger on anything that resists for more than 45 seconds.
  2. Second pass on the medium questions you flagged. These are where the discriminating marks sit.

Balancing MHT-CET With JEE Main

Many Maharashtra students prepare for both. The good news is that the overlap is substantial — the underlying Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics concepts are the same. The differences are format, difficulty calibration and syllabus edges.

A workable approach: prepare on JEE-level material for conceptual depth through the year, then spend the final six to eight weeks converting to MHT-CET format — state board textbook revision for the chapters where syllabi differ, high-volume MCQ practice for speed, and full-length CET mocks for pacing.

The conversion matters. Students who write MHT-CET with a pure JEE mindset lose marks in three predictable ways: they leave questions blank out of habit, they spend too long on individual questions, and they are caught out by state-board-specific content that JEE material does not cover.
